Market Hall at 188 Meeting Street
Back of Card
Constructed in 1840-41, Market Hall was
designed by Charleston architect Edward B. White in a Roman Revival style.
This site occupies land that the Charles Pinckney family gave to the city with
a reversion clause that continues to our current day. Should the city cease
using the site as a public market, then the family could reclaim the property.
This building was severely damaged by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Its renovation
was completed in 2003 and it has been restored to its original color and
detail. |
